Narrator

At a small awards ceremony, Frank is presenting Dr. Chen, a senior colleague, with an award for mentoring young researchers. Tina is in the audience.

Frank01

I'm pleased to present Dr. Chen with this year's mentoring award. She supervised my first study here.

Frank02

Forty-two volunteers tried a memory exercise for three weeks. Their scores didn't improve. I thought I'd wasted everyone's time.

Dr. Chen03

You hadn't. We needed to know whether it worked.

Frank04

I expected criticism. Instead, she left a note on my desk: "Good. Now we know."

Dr. Chen05

You asked if I was being sarcastic.

Frank06

I did. Then she helped me work out what to test next, instead of blaming me for the result.

Dr. Chen07

You'd done the work carefully. An unwelcome result isn't a mistake.

Frank08

That's why I think she's an excellent mentor. She helps young researchers discuss disappointing results openly and plan their next study.

Frank09

I still keep that note. Dr. Chen, thank you for helping us keep going. This award is yours.

Dr. Chen10

Thank you, Frank. I'm glad you kept that note.

Frank11

I couldn't fit all that into four words.

Dr. Chen12

You could have tried "Thank you." But I liked your version.
