Narrator

Frank is visiting Tina in her room. Her mother has messaged to say her grandmother is sick. Tina has a notebook open, filled with travel routes and time differences.

Frank01

You've been calculating for twenty minutes. What did your mother's message say?

Tina02

She said, "Grandma isn't critically ill. I'm taking her dinner every evening."

Frank03

And what's worrying you most?

Tina04

Mom never complains. I'm worried she's worn out, but I haven't asked.

Frank05

Could you leave right away?

Tina06

Not without arranging coverage. My team's report is due in two days, and I'm writing the final version. I hate that work comes first.

Frank07

Needing time to arrange coverage doesn't mean you care less about your family.

Tina08

I know. I just keep imagining Mom trying to manage everything alone.

Frank09

Then ask what she actually needs before deciding about the trip.

Tina10

I'll call Mom tonight, check how Grandma is, and ask what help would actually be useful.

Frank11

What can I do to help right now?

Tina12

Tea, please. And stay while I work out a good time to call Mom. I don't want to wake her.

Frank13

I'll make the tea. At least that doesn't need a time-zone calculation.

WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“work out a good time to call Mom”

Here work out means to determine or coordinate a time or plan. The time difference requires Tina to find a time when her mother will be awake. Work out what to test next in B2-53 similarly means to decide the next step through thought.
