Narrator

Frank has started drawing again, as he used to in the mountain village. Tina is visiting his room and notices a sketch on his desk.

Tina01

You drew this?

Frank02

Yes. It's a sketch of the lab. I wasn't planning to show anyone.

Tina03

You even drew everyone's coffee mugs — but not one person. Where is everybody?

Frank04

Mugs stay still long enough to draw. People don't.

Tina05

Is this what your hobby spreadsheet picked?

Frank06

No. Drawing came last. I thought I'd enjoy it the least. But I tried it, and it takes my mind off work.

Tina07

How's it different from making your science videos?

Frank08

Those explain science to my students. I draw just for fun.

Tina09

Then why didn't you want anyone to see it?

Frank10

If someone questions a fact in my science video, I can check it. But if they dislike my drawing, I'd feel embarrassed to show another one.

Tina11

I like how carefully you've drawn the mug handles. Could you show me your next sketch?

Frank12

I'll show you the next one. Just you, for now. Still no people, though.

Tina13

Good call. I can stay still for five seconds. Six if you pay me.

WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“it takes my mind off work”

Take one's mind off something means to distract attention from it. Concentrating on another activity can offer relief from persistent work worries. Frank describes an unexpected benefit of painting: he stops thinking about work while he does it.

“Good call.”

Good call. informally approves a decision; here call means judgment or choice. Tina agrees with Frank's decision not to paint people yet. Her claim that she can stay still for five seconds, or six if paid, supplies the final joke.
