Frank is meeting a specialist at a care facility. He's asking about support for the aging doctor who made him.
You said you're looking into care options for someone close to you?
Yes. He's like a father to me. He lives alone in a mountain village.
What worries you?
He wrote that climbing the nineteen steps tires him out. He stopped using his upstairs study last winter.
Would he like to use it again?
Yes. He built that house. He says he misses reading in that room.
Has he asked for help?
No. Whenever I mention it in a letter, he writes back with questions about my work. Three pages of them.
What have you suggested?
A visiting nurse, a handrail, moving the study downstairs. His answer is always the same: "Maybe in spring."
Start with his wish to read in that room. Ask, "Could we look for a way for you to read upstairs again?"
I'll ask him. He may still say, "Maybe in spring."
Then ask him which year.
