Narrator

Yesterday, Tina offered Frank coffee. This morning, he texted her: "I think I used the wrong word yesterday." She calls him instead of texting back.

Frank01

You called. Does that mean my text was confusing too?

Tina02

A little. "The wrong word"? Which word?

Frank03

"Fine." When you offered me coffee, I said "Fine."

「Fine(いいよ)」。

Tina04

Did you actually want the coffee? You were frowning at your mug.

Frank05

Yes. "Fine" means "good" or "acceptable." I checked the dictionary last night. Twice.

Tina06

The dictionary isn't wrong. But when you said "Fine" with that frown, you sounded annoyed.

Frank07

I'm the one from Earth. You're from beyond the stars. Why do you know this better than I do?

Tina08

I learned it the hard way. When I was tired, I'd say a very flat "Fine." People kept asking what was wrong.

Frank09

The frown wasn't for you, by the way. I was replaying an argument from a committee meeting at work.

Tina10

And I went quiet because I thought you were mad. Next time, I'll just ask: "Me or the committee?"

Frank11

Deal. I thought your silence meant you wanted to be alone. So we both guessed wrong.

Tina12

Let's practice. Frank, would you like some coffee?

Frank13

Fine. ...I mean — yes, please. I'd love some.

Fine。……

WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“Fine” / “Yes, please.”

Fine normally means good or acceptable. Alone, however, Fine. may sound reluctant or annoyed depending on tone and facial expression. Tina reads Frank's frown as anger toward her. I'm fine. and That's fine. also depend on delivery and context. To warmly accept an offer, Yes, please. or Thanks, I'd love some. makes enthusiasm clear. In the final practice, Frank first says Fine. automatically, then corrects himself to communicate what he feels.

“I learned it the hard way.”

The hard way means through difficulty, mistakes, or painful experience rather than instruction. Tina learned that a tired, curt Fine. sounds annoyed after people repeatedly asked her what was wrong.
