Narrator

Frank waits outside their usual café with his coffee. He's wearing Tina's gift, a navy jacket, outside for the first time. Tina arrives.

Tina01

You're wearing it! Outside! Who are you and what have you done with Frank?

Frank02

I decided this morning. Then I stood by the door for four minutes.

Tina03

Four minutes of what?

Frank04

Working up the courage to leave. I expected everyone to stare at me.

Tina05

Has anyone actually stared?

Frank06

The barista looked up. And a cat watched me through the window.

Tina07

What did the barista say?

Frank08

She said, "New jacket? Nice," and made my usual.

Tina09

So instead of a crowd staring, you got one compliment and a curious cat.

Frank10

Yes. I overestimated how interested everyone would be in my jacket. Significantly.

Tina11

When I gave it to you, I said, "They might just say, 'Nice jacket.'" Pretty close!

Frank12

You did. But I needed to try it for myself. I like it.

Tina13

Good. The barista likes it, you like it, I like it, and I'm counting the cat as a yes. That's unanimous.

WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“Who are you and what have you done with Frank?”

Who are you and what have you done with …? is a familiar joke about behavior so unusual that the person seems to have been replaced. Tina exaggerates her surprise when Frank arrives wearing a jacket he has never worn outside before.

“Working up the courage to leave.”

Work up means to build up something such as courage, appetite, or motivation. Work up the courage to … means to gather enough courage to act. Standing at the door for four minutes just to go out shows Frank's caution and nervousness about wearing the jacket in public.
