Narrator

Tina is opening up to Frank about growing up in the shadow of her high-achieving older sister. A recent conversation with that sister surprised her.

Tina01

My sister was always the overachiever. Certificates in frames, all down the hallway.

Frank02

And your frame?

Tina03

One participation ribbon. For a race I didn't finish.

Frank04

So family dinners were all about her.

Tina05

Every dinner started with her news and ended with my grades. I stopped sharing anything at all.

Frank06

Did you ever tell her that?

Tina07

Last week, finally. On a call. I'd rehearsed it for two days.

Frank08

And?

それで?

Tina09

She went quiet. Then she said, "I've saved all your photos. I wish I'd been brave enough to move away, too."

Frank10

You wanted her grades. She wanted to travel like you.

Tina11

I had no idea. I want her to know I'm proud of her, too.

Frank12

You could send her a card.

Tina13

Better yet, a certificate! "World's Best Sister." She'll need a bigger wall.

WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“My sister was always the overachiever.”

An overachiever performs beyond expectations or is an exceptionally driven high achiever. It can be complimentary or slightly ironic. Tina describes her sister as always being the successful one.

“One participation ribbon.”

A participation ribbon is an award given for taking part in American school events or sports, regardless of placing. Tina self-deprecatingly contrasts her sister's many certificates with her single ribbon for a race she did not even finish.

“Better yet, a certificate!”

Better yet introduces an idea that improves on the previous one. Tina upgrades Frank's suggestion of sending a card to sending a certificate. Even better works similarly.
