Narrator

Tina has arrived at the airport, but her bag never came out on the belt. She goes to the baggage service desk.

Tina01

Excuse me, my bag never came out on the belt.

Agent02

Oh, sorry. How long were you waiting?

Tina03

About thirty minutes, at carousel three. I waited till it stopped.

Agent04

May I see your baggage receipt? And what color and size is the bag?

Tina05

Here you are. It's bright pink and very large. You really can't miss it.

Agent06

Pink, large... and what's inside?

Tina07

Gifts, mostly. And a small star map I can't replace. It's a map of home, and home is very far away.

Agent08

I'll check the number on your receipt now.

Agent09

Found it! It was sent to Paris by mistake. We can get it back to you tomorrow.

Tina10

Oh, thank goodness! My star map's coming back. ...Paris? My bag got a better vacation than I did.

WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“at carousel three”

At an airport, a carousel is the rotating belt that delivers checked bags. The word originally refers to a merry-go-round at an amusement park.

“You really can't miss it.”

Can't miss it means something is so noticeable that it is easy to identify, often in directions or descriptions. Tina means anyone would recognize her large bright-pink bag, rather than that she herself will not overlook it.

“baggage receipt”

Here this means the claim tag you receive when you check a bag. The agent takes Tina's receipt and uses the number on it to trace where the bag went. The bag is not suddenly found just from its color and contents.

“Oh, thank goodness!”

"Oh, what a relief!" This expresses relief when something you were worried about turns out fine. Tina is relieved first of all to learn that her irreplaceable star map is coming back with the bag.

“My bag got a better vacation than I did.”

A joke that treats the bag like a person who had a better vacation than its owner. The did in than I did is used to compare without repeating got. The punchline is that Tina, relieved that her star map is coming back, envies her bag for getting to go all the way to Paris.
