Narrator

Tina has just finished a school project at Frank's place. Her mom calls from her home far away.

Tina01

Hi, Mom! I was just studying, I promise!

Mom02

Still studying? Where are you now?

Tina03

At Frank's place — you know, my Earth friend. You remember him from campus.

Mom04

Oh, the tall boy who showed us around campus?

Tina05

Yes, that's him! Do you want to say hello?

Mom06

Of course! Put him on.

Tina07

Okay. Frank, just say hello. No full report.

Frank08

Good evening, ma'am. Tina finished her project and ate a full dinner.

Mom09

Polite and responsible! Tina, bring him with you next time you visit.

Tina10

Great. Now you're invited to another planet.

WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“showed us around campus”

Show someone around means to guide them through a place while introducing it, rather than merely show it to them. Show us around campus describes giving a walking tour of the campus.

“Put him on.”

On the phone, Put someone on. asks for that person to come to the phone. It is a fixed expression for asking to speak to someone else.

“my Earth friend”

Here this means a friend Tina made on Earth, a friend who is here on Earth. Tina is describing Frank, her friend on Earth, to her mother back in her faraway home. It does not claim that Frank is an Earthling by species.

“No full report.”

A full report is a detailed account. Tina is asking Frank to just say hello and not report on her life in detail. Frank still dutifully reports on her project and her dinner, and the mother likes him for it.

“Good evening, ma'am.”

Ma'am is a polite form of address for a woman; sir is the male equivalent. It is used for older women or in service settings when the name is unknown. Frank politely greets Tina's mother. It also appears in A2-53. Japanese can convey this with a polite greeting alone, without a separate word.

“Now you're invited to another planet.”

Be invited to ... means to receive an invitation to something. Tina says this to Frank after her mother tells her to bring him next time she visits. The punchline is that what was supposed to be a simple hello, followed by Frank's polite report on her life, has turned into an invitation to another planet. No visit has actually been decided yet.
