Narrator

At a university panel, Frank and another researcher are discussing whether a person created by someone else can make independent choices.

Moderator01

If someone creates a person, can that person still make independent choices?

Frank02

I believe so. Being created by someone doesn't mean every later decision belongs to them.

Researcher03

But preferences could come from the creator. How would you tell?

Frank04

I'd look at everyday decisions. I took up drawing because I enjoyed it, not because anyone asked me to.

Moderator05

Are you saying the creator has no influence?

Frank06

Not at all. Our origins help explain us, but I don't think they determine our worth or everything we become.

Researcher07

But a hobby alone doesn't prove independence.

Frank08

Agreed. It's an example, not proof. Still, choosing to keep drawing matters, even when the pictures aren't very good.

Moderator09

So how would you sum up your view?

Frank10

Someone can make you, but that doesn't mean they get to decide who you become.

Researcher11

Could you show us one of your drawings?

Frank12

I'd rather not. I came prepared to defend my opinions, but not my drawings.

Moderator13

Fair enough. We'll stick to discussing your opinions.

WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“they get to decide”

Get to … can mean to be in a position to do something or have the right to do it. Don't get to … firmly denies that authority. Frank's conclusion is that creating someone does not give the creator the right to determine who that person becomes.

“We'll stick to discussing your opinions.”

Stick to something means to stay with a topic or plan, as in stick to the topic or stick to the plan. After Frank declines to show his paintings, the host agrees to limit the discussion to his opinions.
