Narrator

Frank and Tina are at a café, looking at the menus. Earlier, someone from Tina's running club asked her for Frank's phone number.

Tina01

Someone from my running club asked for your number. Her son needs help with a science project. I said I'd ask you first.

Frank02

Thanks for asking. You can give her my work email. But please check with me before sharing my phone number or anything personal about me.

Tina03

Anything personal? Like how you cried when we watched that movie about a son visiting his father?

Frank04

Especially that. Personal moments and anything I tell you in confidence — ask first.

Tina05

And your schedule? Can I say you're busy this week?

Frank06

That's fine. But check before sharing exactly where I'll be and when.

Tina07

And work?

Frank08

You can say I'm a researcher. I'd rather explain my projects myself.

Tina09

Good. I'll check with you whenever I'm unsure.

Frank10

And I'll check with you before sharing your contact details or personal stories, too.

Tina11

Thanks. Should I order?

Frank12

Please. Black coffee for me.

Tina13

Can I tell the waiter you like black coffee, or is that private too?

WORDS & CONTEXT

“anything I tell you in confidence”

In confidence means privately, on the understanding that the information will not be shared. Besides self-assurance, confidence can mean trust or a secret. Frank asks Tina to check with him before telling others something he shared privately.
