The lab committee is about to vote on ending access to the equipment room at ten p.m. Frank has checked the usage logs.

研究室の委員会は、夜10時で機材室の利用を終了する案を採決しようとしている。フランクは利用記録を調べてきた。

Chair01

Before we vote, let's hear from everyone. Frank?

採決の前に、全員のご意見を伺いましょう。フランクさん？

Frank02

Thirty percent of our microscope hours are after ten p.m.

顕微鏡の総利用時間の30％は、夜10時以降です。

Member A03

Who works that late?

そんな時間に、誰が作業しているんです？

Frank04

One person. He writes very detailed reports.

一人です。とても詳しい報告書を書く人物ですね。

Chair05

Frank, is that you?

フランク、それはあなたですか？

Frank06

Yes. The building is rarely quiet before ten.

はい。10時前は、建物が静かなことがめったにないんです。

Member B07

But if someone got hurt alone at two a.m., nobody would notice for hours.

でも、深夜2時に一人で怪我をしたら、何時間も誰にも気づかれませんよ。

Frank08

I agree we need safety checks. Could we lock the room after ten, but allow entry with a night pass?

安全確認が必要なのは同感です。10時以降は施錠しつつ、夜間パスがあれば入室できるようにしてはどうでしょうか？

Chair09

Under what conditions?

どんな条件ですか？

Frank10

Pass holders must sign in with security and call every thirty minutes. If a call is missed, security checks the room. Our night crew can keep working.

パスの利用者は、警備室で入室を記録し、30分ごとに電話することを条件にします。定時の連絡がなければ、警備員が機材室を確認します。夜間作業班も作業を続けられます。

Member A11

"Crew"? It's just you.

「作業班」？あなた一人でしょう。

Frank12

For now. Please approve passes for the whole night crew.

今は、です。夜間作業班の全員分のパスを承認してください。

Chair13

Let's vote on the amendment. If it passes, the whole night crew gets... one pass.

では、修正案を採決しましょう。可決されたら、夜間作業班の全員に……パスが1枚ですね。

WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“If it passes, the whole night crew gets... one pass.”

An amendment changes a proposal. Pass has two meanings here: as a verb, approval of the amendment; as a noun, an access permit. The chair links If it passes to one pass, wryly revealing that the supposedly entire night crew consists only of Frank.
