Narrator

Two weeks ago, Frank and Tina set up a shared calendar to make plans together. Now they're checking it at a café.

Tina01

Question. Every Wednesday evening, your calendar says "busy." Seven to ten. No label.

Frank02

Correct.

Tina03

That's it? "Correct"? Secret club? Drum lessons? Give me a clue!

Frank04

That's time I keep for myself. I'd rather not share the details.

Tina05

Okay, but I thought we shared this so we'd know when to invite each other out.

Frank06

Exactly. Does "busy" tell you enough to pick another evening?

Tina07

For making plans, yes. But now I'm curious.

Frank08

I get curious too. But to plan dinner, I only need to know when you're free.

Tina09

I know. But it's like a wrapped present I'm not allowed to shake. And shaking is the best part!

Frank10

I'll tell you this much: it's not a secret club, and I'm not learning the drums.

Tina11

There go my best guesses. I've been shaking this box for two weeks!

Frank12

But I'd like to keep the actual plans to myself. Is that okay?

Tina13

Okay. I'm giving it a label myself: "Frank's mystery. Do not shake."

WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“a wrapped present I'm not allowed to shake”

In the United States, shaking a wrapped gift to guess its contents from sound or weight is a familiar amusement, especially with presents under a Christmas tree. Givers may jokingly say No shaking! Tina compares the unlabeled Wednesday appointment to a tempting present she is forbidden to investigate. Her final Do not shake. promises herself that she will stop prying.

“There go my best guesses.”

There goes … lightly laments something disappearing or being spoiled. With a plural subject, it becomes There go …. Tina dramatically mourns her confident guesses of a secret club and drums after Frank rules them out. And there goes the last slice. in B2-57 uses the same pattern.
