WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“We met these two at a trivia night.”

A trivia night is a team quiz event at a bar or restaurant, a familiar American pastime. In Britain it is often a quiz night or pub quiz. Trivia means miscellaneous facts or general knowledge.

“We came in last”

Come in followed by a placing means to finish in that position. Come in last means to finish at the bottom. The two people seemed happy even though they finished last at trivia night.

“Cheers!”

Cheers! accompanies raising or clinking glasses in a toast. In Britain and elsewhere it can also mean thanks or goodbye, but here it is a drinking toast.
