WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“Please sign up tonight if you'd like to join us.”

Sign up means to register to participate, originally by writing your name. A sign-up sheet is the form participants write on. Here prospective volunteers add their names to that sheet.

“There goes my plan.”

There goes … reacts to a plan or hope being ruined by an unexpected event or remark. Compare There goes my weekend. Tina's plan has just been spoiled.
