Narrator

Tina is visiting Frank. She's worried about a friend's boyfriend and wants to talk to her about him.

Tina01

My friend's boyfriend borrowed money from two of her friends. He hasn't paid them back.

Frank02

Did they tell you themselves?

Tina03

Yes, both of them. I want to tell her to leave him.

Frank04

Has she asked for your advice?

Tina05

No, but I can't ignore this.

Frank06

You can tell her what they said without telling her what to do.

Tina07

And if she defends him?

Frank08

Then listen. She may have something to tell you, too.

Tina09

So I'll explain why I'm worried, then hear her side.

Frank10

Exactly. Give her time to respond.

Tina11

Okay. Then I don't need my speech.

Frank12

You wrote a speech?

Tina13

Three pages. I'll keep the first line: "How are you?"

WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“I want to tell her to leave him.”

Here leave means to end a relationship with a partner or spouse, rather than simply move away physically. Tina wants to tell her friend to break up with him.

“So I'll explain why I'm worried, then hear her side.”

Hear someone's side means to listen to their perspective in a disagreement. Side represents a position or viewpoint. Hear both sides asks for each party's account. Tina plans to explain her worries, then listen to her friend.
