Narrator

Tina's kitchen. A scorched pot sits on the stove like evidence. Frank is inspecting it.

Tina01

I'm twenty-three, Frank, and I still can't cook a single thing.

Frank02

If you had to cook for yourself, you'd learn fast enough.

Tina03

I'd starve first. I burned rice yesterday. Rice has, like, one rule.

Frank04

Did you read the instructions?

Tina05

Instructions are boring. I just wish adulting came with a manual.

Frank06

It does. It's called the back of the rice bag. One cup of rice, two cups of water, lid on, twenty minutes. Does that make sense?

Tina07

Totally. So I open the lid every two minutes to check.

Frank08

No. Lid on. That's the one rule.

Tina09

Ugh. Fine.

Frank10

Tonight we're gonna make one thing. You read, I supervise.

Tina11

And if I burn it?

Frank12

Then we order pizza. And never speak of the rice again.

WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“I just wish adulting came with a manual.”

Adulting informally turns adult into a verb for handling everyday adult responsibilities, such as cooking, cleaning, and paying bills. Failing Adulting means struggling with these duties. Tina wishes adult life came with instructions.

“And never speak of the rice again.”

Never speak of something again jokingly treats an embarrassing failure as something to erase from memory. Frank teases Tina by suggesting they permanently bury the story of yesterday's burnt rice.
