WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“Brand new!” / “Nice find.”

Brand new means completely new. Nice find. praises someone for discovering a good purchase or bargain. Here find is a noun meaning something discovered, rather than a verb.

“I love a good deal.”

Besides meaning a transaction, deal often refers to a bargain. A good deal is a purchase at a favorable price. Tina is pleased with the sneakers she bought for half price.

“Counting is for Earthlings, Frank.”

Earthling means an inhabitant of Earth, a word aliens often use for humans in science fiction. Something is for … can suggest that it is someone else's concern. Tina uses her alien identity to dodge the question of how many pink things she owns.
