Narrator

A research ethics panel is questioning Tina about her study of the city's bike-share system. Her approval came through on March fifteenth, but some of her data work started earlier.

Panel01

Your report says analysis began on March second, before approval on March fifteenth. Why?

Tina02

Let me explain the data analysis and the interviews separately.

Panel03

Start with the records.

Tina04

I analyzed public bike-share records: trip times and docking stations. I started because my supervisor said I could.

Panel05

Did you confirm that with us?

Tina06

No. She told me in the hallway, "You can start with the public records."

Panel07

Your supervisor's advice isn't approval from this panel.

Tina08

I see. Let me put it another way: I treated advice as permission. I should've checked with you.

Panel09

And the forty riders you interviewed? When did recruiting start?

Tina10

March twentieth, after approval. Everyone signed the approved consent form before their interview. That part I did by the book.

Panel11

Send a timeline separating those two stages by Friday. We'll review the early analysis separately.

Tina12

You'll have it Thursday. Could you confirm receipt by email? I'm getting everything in writing now.

Panel13

Yes. But "good morning" in the hallway is still allowed.

WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“Her approval came through on March fifteenth”

Come through describes an awaited approval, permission, or result finally arriving after processing. Compare My loan came through. The problem is that Tina began analyzing the data before the approval arrived on March fifteenth.

“Let me put it another way”

Let me put it another way. introduces a reformulation of a point or understanding after someone responds. Let me put it this way. and In other words are similar. The expression also appears in B2-47 and B2-56. Here Tina briefly restates her mistake: she treated advice as permission.

“That part I did by the book.”

By the book means according to the rules or prescribed procedure. Moving That part to the beginning emphasizes a contrast: at least this part was handled correctly.
