Narrator

Tina arrived late to the evening class that Frank audits after work. Her train was delayed by rain. They are talking during a break.

Tina01

Sorry I ran in late. My train was delayed again.

Frank02

Again? That's your third time this week.

Tina03

I know. I waited on the platform for fifteen minutes.

Frank04

Maybe try an earlier train next time.

Tina05

But all the trains were delayed because of the rain!

Frank06

That's frustrating. An earlier train would give you more time. Did the professor say anything?

Tina07

She gave me a look when I sat down.

Frank08

She's strict 'cause she cares about us.

Tina09

Yeah... I'll leave home earlier tomorrow.

Frank10

That should give you a little more time.

Tina11

Or tell me class starts at eight p.m. instead of nine.

Frank12

All right. Seven thirty p.m. Just to be safe.

WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“She gave me a look”

Here give someone a look means to direct a meaningful or reproachful glance at them. The professor silently expresses disapproval when Tina arrives late and sits down.

“An earlier train would give you more time.”

Earlier means sooner, and give you more time means to leave you more time to spare. Frank is not blaming Tina for the train delays; he suggests leaving early on rainy days to allow for delays. He does not claim that this will always prevent her from being late.

“Just to be safe.”

Just to be safe means as a precaution: something may not really be necessary, but you allow extra margin anyway. The real start time is 9 p.m. When Tina asks Frank to tell her it starts at 8 p.m. so she will leave early, Frank answers with 7:30 p.m., another thirty minutes earlier. He is not actually changing the start time; it is a joke to get her moving early. Because it is an evening class, all the times are p.m.
