WORDS & CONTEXT

Words & context

“Can I get a name for the order?”

American cafés often ask for a customer's name so they can call it when the drink is ready, a less common practice in Japan. Can I get …? is a casual equivalent of May I have …? Here the barista asks for the name on the order. Frank's answer, No name., creates a problem because the barista needs one.

“Mr. No Name”

Mr. is a title placed before a man's name. Tina turns Frank's No name. into a nickname, "Mr. No Name." Faced with having his order called out under that nickname, Frank finally gives his name himself: My name is Frank. That is the punchline.
