Belonging Panel — Coda

A few months after their previous university visit, Frank and Tina are back for a discussion about feeling at home in a new place. Afterward, a student asks them for advice.
I'm transferring to a college in Chicago next month. I won't know anyone. How can I feel at home there?
Start small. Talk to someone after class, then suggest having lunch together.
I like cooking. I'm taking my grandmother's rice cooker.
Once you know someone, invite them to cook with you. Having something to do together can make talking easier.
But I'll move again for an internship after a year. Is it worth making friends?
Yes. Sharing meals, studying together, and helping each other through bad days can make that year much less lonely.
And one meal together could become a regular thing.
Won't that make leaving harder?
It can. Leaving my village was hard. But moving doesn't mean you have to lose touch.
Do you still miss home?
Yes. I miss my family. Calling my mom helps, and so does having someone here to eat with.
So, talk to a classmate, then invite them to cook with me?
Exactly. Just remember to cook enough for two.
